I remember when I was a little kid riding in the passenger seat of my mothers Corvair. Gas then was like 30 cents a gallon. As teens, my friends and I would come up with a dollar or two to contribute to my friend’s gas tank and cruise around all night long. When I was a gas station attendant, gas was 50 cents a gallon. But now, gas is holding at around $4 per gallon.
The price of gas in Canada and the European countries has always been a lot more than here in the U.S. But, they have high taxes on gas to help pay for social services, such as universal health care. Here in the U.S., we don’t.
Many people want to grumble and moan as to why. I am sure there are numerous reasons, and since we are not the powers that be, we will never know the entire story. But regardless of why, it just is what it is, and there is nothing that we can do about it. In addition, right now it is not easy to just sell off the gas guzzler that people current own and that they owe money on because no one wants to buy them right now, if ever. So, all we can do is take measures to lower our gas bills.
Drive at or below the speed limit. The less that you press on the gas, the less you will use.
The smoother you drive going from point A to point B the less gas you will use.
Stay in the lane that you need to be in. If my next turn is to the right, I drive in the right lane. If my next turn is to the left, I drive in the left lane. I do not weave in and out of lanes.
Try to make all of your trips into one. For example, I go to the grocery store on my way home from church on Sundays, and I buy enough to last a entire week. And, if at all possible, I only go to one store. What few cents you may save at a second or third store on a few items will get used up in the amount of gas that you use.
Most of all, calm yourself before driving. You will drive slower and smoother, and hence, use less gas.
These are the tactics that I use to save gas, which is really all we can do at this point. Getting all worked up about it only raises our own stress levels, and hence, harms us, not the powers that be, who, in reality, is the target of your anger.
